Yesterday was such a fun day! Kyle had the day off so we decided to head down to Avery Island. Avery Island is the home of the Tabasco factory, and it definitely did not disappoint. They only have the factory going Monday-Thursday so coming on the weekend wouldn't have been as fun.
We got there just in time for the next tour, we watched a short video and then got to see the bottling process. They produce roughly 700,000 bottles a day, which is crazy to me! This island actually sits on the first rock salt mine discovered in the US and it is as deep at Mount Everest is tall.

When the peppers are ready and mashed they are sealed in Jack Daniels barrels (they buy them from the company because JD can only use them once) and they put a thick layer of salt on the top to keep any impurities from getting in, they ferment for about 3 years.
After the tour we headed into the cutest gift shop and picked up some goodies. I had to get a new spoon to add to my collection. I had some Raspberry Chili ice cream and it was AMAZING!
I am pretty sure Kyle got enough Tabasco to last him a while, he picked up a kind called Reserve and it is only sold in the gift shop.
J puts this stuff on everything! We'll have to visit if we're ever down that way. That ice cream sounds intriguing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun date! I can't handle a lot of spice, so I don't use much Tabasco. However, touring that plant sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteMan I wish I could handle that stuff. I read that it's GREAT for your metabolism but it's too much for me!!
ReplyDeleteSuper cool day date!!! That's awesome that he had the day off. We love going to places like that where we can learn how stuff is made! Also... raspberry chili ice cream??? Sold! I want some!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so fun! Chris told me at some point in a random conversation that he wanted to go there one day!

ReplyDeleteHoly crap, I didn't know they made so many kinds! What a fun trip, I love tours of places like that.
ReplyDeleteOh very cool! I never knew they used the JD barrels!
ReplyDeleteThis trip sounds like so much fun, Jen! We love tabasco ourselves as well!
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot of fun! :)
DeleteYou guys always do the coolest stuff! I'm not a tobasco fan, but I'd love to do a tour like this!
ReplyDeleteJason loves hot sauce! I like the flavor but can't handle the heat, lol. Looks like a fun day!
ReplyDeleteI need to pick your brain about things to do around here because you find all the coo stuff to go to! This looks like such a fun little trip!
ReplyDelete:) It was a lot of fun!!
DeleteThat does sound like a cool place to visit, and a cool fun fact about the JD barrels too!
ReplyDeleteWe saw this on tv a while back and have wanted to go ever since!
ReplyDeleteFun! I can't handle spicy stuff, but I think it would be neat to see how it is made.
ReplyDeleteMy friend and I are looking at a bus tour to Louisiana that stops at Avery Island to tour the factory! It sounds really exciting even though neither of us like Tabasco.
