Saying Goodbye

Friday was one of the hardest days we have had in a very long time. We had to say goodbye to our precious, Emma.

We found out from her vet that she was indeed experiencing kidney failure and there was nothing that could successfully be done for her especially at her advanced age. We knew that any extreme efforts to prolong her life were selfish and not benefiting her in any way. We were faced with making an extremely difficult choice. At 11:20am on Friday we said our final goodbyes to her and let her go. A friend of ours watched E for us so we could both be with her, it was very much appreciated.

I snapped this photo on Friday morning of my girls.
To some, dogs are just pets and nothing more. To us, Emma was a very important and special part of our family. She spent every day of her 14 years of life with me. She came from a litter of puppies born to my parents dogs. I remember when my sister called me and told me that my puppy had been born. She was my constant companion. She was with me for so many events in my life. Marriage, divorce, marrying Kyle, the loss of my Mom, deployments, the birth of E, and 5 moves. She traveled with us pretty much everywhere we went, including the Grand Canyon.
She was known for her big floppy ears and her snuggles.
She and Fishy were buddies, he loved chasing her and she loved nipping at him.
She was a huge part of our lives and we are devastated that she is no longer with us.
She loved E, and tolerated the constant petting and attempts to give her kisses.
It's been a hard few days adjusting to her not being here but we have so many amazing memories to hang on to. We gave her the best life we could and she was so loved.

Friday was a hard day for our whole family. My sister and her family had to say goodbye to their beloved boxer, Clarence. We know that Emma and Clarence are playing together and not in pain anymore.
We will miss you sweet pups.

  4. It's been about 1.5 years since I lost my dog. I still miss her. It's always so hard to be with them while you put them down. You spend weeks in depression, then that horrid hour or so while it happens, and then at least a few weeks of mourning.

I'm sorry for your loss, I know it's never easy.

  5. My heart is literally breaking for you right now! Our fur babies are our babies, especially when we have them before our human kids arrive. There's no real easy way to help with the pain, but holding onto all of the happy memories you had plus knowing that you gave her the best life is all that you can do and that hole in your heart will slowly start to heal. Sending lots of hugs from Texas to all of y'all!

  13. Oh my gosh, Jen, this ripped my heart in two. I know some people look at animals as just animals, but for some of us they are truly family. I know that Emma has been with you for so much and I am so sorry for your loss. Sending you lots and lots of love! XO

  14. We adopted a very old one-eyed cat that was abandoned, and then later an older (10 year old) cat that no one wanted at the no-kill shelter. The oldest one passed not long ago too. We only had him a year and a half but it was still hard to lose him. I was glad we made the end of his life so happy and he felt so loved. I was glad when we could be with him at the end as well. I'm sorry for your loss. It is a missed family presence, for sure. :(
