Since we have been settled in Kansas for almost 2 months now I thought it was time to share the crazy yet comical experience we had getting our stuff. Let me just say that if you make it through this whole post, you are a rockstar!
So if you have followed my blog for any length of time you know that I am 100% all for the military moving us. I have zero desire to pack all of our stuff, rent a u-haul, load it, and unload it at our new location. So I will take my chances and have someone else do all of the hard work. This is the 6th time we have had the Army move us and by far the craziest experience we have ever had.
While by all accounts our move went smoothly, we had 2 things broke (an old plate and the tail off E's giraffe table, but that's an easy fix) and we received our stuff within a reasonable time frame. However, making that happen proved to be much trickier than we anticipated.
Let's back up to the day our stuff left Louisiana. We were told by the driver that on Sunday our HHG (household goods) would be leaving Louisiana and would arrive in Kansas for an 8am delivery on Monday. This prompted a change in plans, I was heading to Kansas early to sign for the house and receive our goods. Yay right?! Well that's what we thought.
I arrived in Kansas on Sunday night, unloaded E, and the furry kids into the hotel. Let me tell you, doing that solo is hard! On Monday morning, I loaded everything and everyone back into the car so I could rush to housing, pick up the keys to the house and wait for our goods. I honestly had never been so happy to be in an empty house.
Well, 8am came and went with no sign of the driver. Kyle and I both called only to be told that they were just leaving Branson, Missouri. Ummm Branson?! That's on the other side of where we are and completely out of the way but okay. They said they would arrive by 10:30. I'm sure you can guess what happens next. Yup, no goods at 10:30. After numerous phone calls to both the driver and the manager at the home office we were told our goods would arrive NLT 2pm.
I get a phone call at 1pm from the driver saying that they are in line waiting to be inspected at the gate!
An hour passes.....my phone rings. The driver's helper can't get on post because he has a prior conviction on his record from 20 years ago! Now, not only is this frustrating for me but for Kyle as well. He was 12 hours away and could literally do nothing to help.
SO! I try to vouch for the helper because I want my stuff but that's a no go (which honestly is to be expected here). So the helper got dropped off at a hotel and the driver headed back to post to deliver my stuff by himself. At this point it is 3:30pm, I'm hangry and E is flaming out. I grabbed food, headed home, and then my phone rang. The driver can't get on post because his truck is leaking!!!!!! WTF!?
At this point I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I'm pretty sure I cried out of anger and frustration. Since the truck wasn't being let on post, the driver had to go rent a u-haul which was a 1/4 of the size of the moving truck our stuff was on. I'm sure you can guess where this is going. Our stuff had to be offloaded between two trucks without me or Kyle there to watch. Cue panic. It didn't help that the driver was pissed at us (I still to this day have no idea why) and he made it incredibly awkward. So our stuff was off loaded between two trucks in a hotel parking lot.
The driver was able to deliver one load of stuff at 7pm on Monday night with the help of another worker they managed to pull from another crew. However, that worker was unable to help him on Tuesday so instead of bringing our stuff to start unloading he sat in the hotel parking lot pouting until his manager let him have it.
It took him 3 trips on Tuesday but we finally received all of our stuff. Typically the movers are supposed to put together anything they took apart at the origination location. I said no because I just wanted my house to myself. So that night, I put all of the beds together so I didn't have to sleep on the floor again haha.

I'm not writing this post to complain at all because let's face it I would rather deal with this then pack my stuff myself haha. We can laugh about it now because it's over and done with. Plus we just got our travel money from the move and paid off my car so that's a win in my book haha!
Have you had any out of the ordinary moving experiences?
I really wish one's record would not prevent them from being restricted in the future. Especially post-10 years.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly!!!! He had worked for the company for 10 years with no issues.
DeleteDuring one of our moves the poor guys had to carry all of our stuff up three flights of stairs to our apartment and I heard one of them say, "I should have gone to college" when he was struggling with some pretty heavy items. I felt bad for him lol. So glad you guys finally got your stuff! What a mess!
ReplyDeleteI was honestly really surprised how smoothly our move went. Leading up to the move was a nightmare because Fort Eustis dicked around and we didn't know if we were going to have movers until 4 days before the move so I had to hire people just in case. But we only had one thing broken and as far as I know, nothing was lost :) can't beat that!
ReplyDeleteI denied most of the putting together this time around too, because after our hellish experience, I just wanted them gone! It's so crazy how all of us have had some sort of issues with our PCSs this summer!
ReplyDeleteGirl I just didn't blog about ours because I don't want to sound whiney. It was pretty much SHIT though. Haha, let's hear it for a DITY move 27 hours away....NOT. Not to mention there was a massive ice/snowstorm in the middle of our move, and it was the week before Christmas, AND the military dumped my husband out of the pay system so we had no paycheck the month of December (or health insurance or life insurance until we got it fixed once we got to Mass). I wouldn't do it again, but it was definitely an adventure. I don't think much of all we did getting here but I guess in some ways I am a pretty badass bitch to not even flinch or wipe a tear away amidst it all, lol lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you guys are settled and loving your new place. You definitely got a great duty station this time!! I wish you guys would get stationed up here!
Oh good gracious! You are a saint for dealing with all of that. I think my tears were only because I wanted E's crib so she would sleep for more than 30 minutes hahaha.
DeleteOur move to Korea was our first military move! We've DITYed before, but at this point, I would rather have the military because the two moves we've done ourselves was exhausting!
ReplyDeleteRight?! I just have zero desire to do all that work. Obviously, if we had to I would but thank goodness for the military!
DeleteOh geez, what a nightmare! So glad you blogged about this experience, if nothing else for the sole point of being able to re-read your post about it in 10 years when Kyle is retired and laugh!
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes, what a nightmare! It's like out of a soap opera! But you're right, you can't do anything but laugh because it's so out of your control and no point in getting stressed. Although I totally would have punched someone. HAHA
ReplyDeleteGoodness me! What a bummer!I am glad you have all your good. Wierdness happens and hopefully that company will get it straight so other people won't have problems like you had. We moved internationally from England to NM when we were in the USAF. Got my car in NJ and drove across the states, in winter. Did hit snow and ice places. Our goods were delivered ok. So many years ago. Thanks for sharing your story with funny videos in there that worked well together! Tee Hee!
ReplyDeleteOh no! I would have been in table-flipping mode as well, if there were anything to flip... So glad it all came through and with minimal breakages, and you got a funny story out of it in the end :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes our move from New Mexico to California nine years ago, we were brave and rented a U-Haul truck, and a trailer to haul our Van, left out at three in the afternoon thinking we would drive a bit and rent a motel, needless to say my wife, our dog, and I ended up sleeping in the cab of the U-haul and Cindy swears if we ever move again we are hiring someone to do it for us.
ReplyDeleteYour experience with the movers had to be frustrating, not funny at the time but good to laugh at now, I can just picture you dismissing the mover and putting your stuff together yourself, I don't blame you for that. Congrats on paying the car off.
Oh my gosh. That's CRAZY. Comical and annoying, but also so military haha we will always use military movers because there's zero way I'm moving my stuff. #nope
ReplyDeleteWhen we moved to Drum, our stuff was put in storage in the middle of winter (after moving from Huachuca), and the truck trailer froze shut. Our goods were 16 days late, and then they scheduled the wrong Moore family's stuff to be delivered to us. That was honestly the worst though haha looking back, I can laugh.
ugh! I'm so sorry you had to deal with all of that. Not something that should happen but I'm glad there wasn't anything major broken. Hope your father can fix that adorable table!
ReplyDeleteThat is so crazy! I can't believe the company didn't screen the driver to get on post. At least nothing was lost or broken too badly!
