it never hurts to be prepared

For the last few years I have been talking about getting CPR/First Aid Certified through the Red Cross. I kept putting it off but once we moved here and I knew that once again I would be really involved with the FRG I knew I needed to do it. A few days ago I registered for the Adult and Pediatric CPR/First Aid class in May. I'm really excited about it and I figured since I would be dealing with people in social situations/big events you can never be too prepared. I'm also doing it for my own personal benefit.

It was pricey but I know it will be well worth it and the certification is good for 2 years.

I feel like lately all I have been doing is taking training classes but I know that it will only benefit me and I can help those around me as well.

Are any of you CPR/First Aid certified?

  1. We have to redo our CPR every two years as well as nurses in Singapore! I also have a red cross certificate from many many years back, and I must say that after all my training and all my different certificates in CPR from various places, the first aid from red cross was the best class I have attended! It was really good, think you will enjoy it! :)

  2. I am or I was. I'm not really sure if it is still current, since I haven't worked there in 1.5 years. The job I had in Crisis Intervention/Mental Health required us to be First Aid/CPR certified, so they paid for everyone to be.

  3. I've been wanting to get mine since college. I was in a health program and they offered a discounted class, and now I kick myself in the butt for not doing it!!

  7. I did stuff like that in a church class. No certificate though. But I always had an idea but I wish I had done a class when I was pregnant cause I have no clue what to do for a newborn, an it always made me paranoid! So it definitely comes in handy!

  8. I am CPR/AED/First Aid certified through the Red Cross from when I was a camp counselor last summer. I think my CPR/AED certification expires this year, though. I was also trained as a psuedo-lifeguard-- my camp requires all staff to watch the videos on lifeguarding techniques (minus the swimming) and become watchers at the waterfront area just to help the lifeguards.

  9. I have been meaning to take these classes for a few years. I am always afraid my kids will have an issue, and I won't know what to do. I was certified years ago (in high school), but it has been so long I need a refresher course.

  10. Well because of my profession I am CPR/BLS/ACLS certified, and required by law and hospital every 2 years. I think it is an excellent skill to have. It never hurts to refresh and learn the few key differences that have changed from year to year. BUT I can also see how this seems tedious because of cost.

    1. I am really excited about it and of course the cost was part of my hesitation but I finally realized that it's completely worth it. :)

  11. I used to be a Red Cross Instructor. (I think my cert has lapsed however) I taught it as an elective to my middle school students, as well as a few times a month in the community. They say you have to practice like 100 hours or something before it becomes second nature. I'd like to think I would be able to respond in an emergency.

  12. Good for you!!! I am and have been for quite some time as I have always worked with the developmental disabilities population. Luckily I have never had to use it, but it really is great to know! You will enjoy the class!

  13. I was in high school. Then when I decided I wanted to become group fitness certified, I had to do it again, but the base here won't offer it and I didn't want to pay $110 in Anchorage. My school district also charged $110, for even coaches. That's a lot of coaches paying a lot of money for something that's required. THEN, in September, a 2 year old died at one of the district's daycares...because the workers didn't know proper CPR or how to use an AED. Then the district offered it for $12 in October because they were so ashamed of themselves. I took it then. Assholes, right?

  14. I learned first aid and CPR sometime ago. Definitely something worthwhile. I'd do first aid again if my schedule allows.

  15. I need to do this. Soon. I should've had it already but I never make the time. It's definitely a great skill to have and I hope to be certified by the end of this summer!

  16. Thank you for being so involved and thinking ahead. It definitely never hurts to be prepared. In Germany, we have to attend a 2-day First Aid class at the Red Cross in order to be able to get our driver's license. It makes sense, and I probably should take a refresher.

  19. I'm not, but my husband has had to use CPR quite a few times in his career. I tend to leave the medical stuff to him, but I can probably get him to teach me the basic strategies just in case--to me, if you aren't using it for a specific job, the official certification probably isn't as necessary, but it's still good to know the skills!

  20. I'm not, but it's something I keep wanting to do. Especially with Tay and the other on the way. Just yesterday, Tay started choking on a smallish toy (never done this before) and it was so scary. Luckily, a good cough and she was fine, but having that certification would have been beneficial there.

  21. I love that you're doing that! I am certified and loved the training experience! My work provided a one day session because we work a lot with children. We learned how to do first aid as well as CPR for adults and children/babies. Definitely worth the time and money!

  22. You totall inspired me! I just signed up for the same class in May as well. I'm embarassed to say that I work in a medical office and as a dance teach but do not have my first aid/cpr/aed cert. I'm doing the combo class because many of my students and a good amount of our patients are kids. Thanks for giving me the kick in the ass I needed!
