Birthday Preparations

In less than a month, on May 5th to be exact, we will celebrate Kyle's 30th birthday! I'm sure most of you notice that Kyle is a very low key guy and he does not like a lot of pomp and circumstance.  I have been racking my brain on what to get him and what to do to celebrate his day. I did promise him that I wouldn't make him wear a sombrero on his birthday like I did a few years ago lol. It's just what you do when your birthday is on Cindo de Mayo! ;)

Gifts are the tricky part, the man has everything and usually buys things when he wants them. He made mention a few months back that he wanted to get better at golf, ding ding! Golf lessons!! I know this is something he will love and I plan on getting him a few personalized golf towels as well just to go along with the lessons.

I thought about throwing a small dinner party but then I realized that he would be happier with a low key dinner at home with just the two of us because he will have just finished up with a hectic rotation at work. I'm going to make his favorite meal which is homemade spicy chicken fingers and garlic/parsley french fries.

For dessert it will be a homemade funfetti cake with whipped cream frosting. I will pair that with homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream. This combination is his absolute favorite. I want to do something fun with the cake decorations and these cakes are just what I'm looking for:

I think these cakes are amazing and hopefully I can do something similar. I want to make his birthday special without overwhelming him.

Do you enjoy big birthday celebrations or a low key dinner at home?

Have a great Wednesday!

  2. Sounds perfect. I gave Brian a huge Ghostbuster themed surprise party for his 30th. I swear I wanted it more to plan a party but we had fun. I love the cake idea. They are so fun!

  3. Aww, I think this sounds like an awesome birthday, and those cakes are adorable! I feel bad because Dan's birthday was last Friday, but I was just getting out of the hospital, so we went to a VERY low-key dinner, and that was it. I didn't even have time to put his gift together, so I have yet to give it to him... oops. I should probably get on that.

  4. We usually do something fairly low key for birthdays around here-favorite dinner, fun activity, etc. Those cakes are adorable!

  7. My husbands birthday is in May as well. We have a great bakery up here so I'll get him a cake there. I cannot do fancy decorations...lol. Golf lessons is such a great gift!

  8. Men are so hard to shop for! Golf lessons are a great idea! Similar to Hubby he hates all the hoopla around his birthday so we usually keep it supper small. What kind of ice cream maker do you have or do you use something else to make it? The ice cream sounds so yummy!

  10. Tyler is the same way (as am I) with birthday celebrations. The cake will be super cute! I always have a difficult time coming up with gifts for TJ as well... when he wants something, he just buys it (within reason, of course). Did you teach yourself how to decorate cakes? I've considered taking a class, haha. Is that lame?

  12. I love how prepared you are. 30 is a big deal. I threw my hubby a huge 30th birthday party (but it was definitely more his style)

  15. We usually do low key dinners at home. I still have yet to get husband to remember a cake for me. Oh, I can have a piece when we go out to eat but I am always full by then! sigh! The cakes look nice and I've decorated cakes before and that was always fun! One of these days I want to make one of those doll ones for my granddaughter where you put the doll figure in and the cake is it's skirt. Have fun planning!

  16. I think it sounds like you have every detail planned perfectly!! I LOVE the cake idea, too. We go big for Birthdays, but it's not always a party. Sometimes it's a dinner out or trip somewhere fun. Really, as long as I'm with Will I'm happy.

  17. Not that you asked, but instead of throwing JJ a surprise party (which would have been next to impossible with his on-call schedule) I found 30 of his family and friends, and mailed them a scrapbook page to decorate and send back to me. Then on his birthday I presented it to him and he saw lots of blasts from the past with special words to him. Many of these people he hadn't seen for years and I could tell he really appreciated the thought. The cake sounds awesome and I'm sure whatever you decide to do will be just perfect for him!

  21. Cute! I've always enjoyed low key birthdays, especially if we can celebrate them on the actual day. That makes it 10 times better!
