Our Four Legged Family Members

It's no surprise to anyone who has read my blog for a while that we love our furbabies, Emma and Fishy. The last few days I have seen a few posts from friends that have lost their pets or are getting a  new pet and it inspired me to write this.

To be honest I really didn't want pets as an adult, I was happy to not have the responsibility. However, when my parents dogs were having puppies I said yes, but my request was to have the first born girl. Welcome, Emma! She has been my little sidekick since the day she was born and from the moment I brought her home I knew she would always be my little companion.

My ex-husband didn't like her, he thought she was annoying (it was him that was annoying) and never gave her attention so she was not a fan of men. That all changed when Kyle and I got married, she was his dog, she was his baby and always gets so excited when he gets home from work. She is spunky and has so much attitude, she still acts like a puppy at 11 years old.

Next, enter Fishy. I found him when he was 5 1/2 weeks old in an abandoned house in my neighborhood. He had a severe upper respiratory infection and was near death. I never had a desire to have a cat, I just didn't see myself as a cat person. Again, that all changed with him. When my ex and I split up I actually threatened him when he said he was going to take Fishy.

He is a far cry from that sickly kitten and is hilarious. He gives love when we wants to and is the silent and sassy 7 year old observer in our house.

When someone says that the love of a pet is unconditional and without reservation they are absolutely correct. Emma and Fishy have been there to snuggle and love us through deployments, moves, deaths, miscarriages and everything in between. I truly believe that an animal can tell when something is askew in their house. We celebrate their birthdays (with cake and all) and include them in every holiday celebration. :)

They even like each other...well sometimes. lol.

I cannot imagine our life without them, they bring so much happiness and joy. I am a far cry from that person that had no desire to have pets and for Kyle to go from living by himself to having a wife and two pets in a matter of 2 months is pretty amazing.

I am thankful for their constant presence and funny little personalities, they are family.

I hope you all have an awesome weekend!

  5. Such a sweet post :) And all so true. Even when I'm yelling at a dog, they still are just waiting for me to stop so they can come lick me or get a hug.

  7. Emma and Fishy are so cute! Can't imagine life without pets. We don't currently have a dog and often miss having one, even with all the work they can be. We have tons of barn cats which aren't quite the same but at least a couple of them will let me hold them and give them attention.

  12. My cat is my baby. If I were ever seeing a guy that didn't like Frankie, I'd dump the guy and keep my cat.

  18. YAY! I love this post so, so much! Animals have all the amazing qualities of humans and none of the bad ones. Most importantly, unconditional love. I love Judy SO much (crazy dog lady!) and don't know what I would do without her. Have a great weekend, friend! XO

  19. I'm not a pet person at all but we got our German Shepard, Stryker a little over 4 years ago and I can not even picture our life without him :) I think he has totally changed my opinion on pets :)

  20. Indeed, pets are family, and I can't wait to have a cat (or two) once things have quieted down a little at our house. We planned on getting a cat earlier this year, but had to admit to myself and hubby that I was simply not up to adding a pet to the family right now, with Calvin and all. May Emma and Fishy be with you for many, many more years!!

  30. Fur babies are just as important! We've been holding off on getting a new pet, but I keep seeing puppies and it's so hard to not bring them home!! We both agree we want to adopt again, so we probably won't end up with a puppy, but either way we will love them like a child!

  31. I love this post! Animals are such great companions. When I got fired (ages ago), I was sitting on floor and I was really upset. Chomps came over and curled in my lap and started purring. He knew how upset I was and he wanted me to feel better. He never sits in my lap and he's never done it since. Perfect timing anyways. I'll have to do a post like this now. Haha! estherdavison@gmail.com
