Love The Place You Live

I remember when we first got orders to El Paso back in October. We were beyond excited for a new adventure and to live in a new place. As excited as we were, we got a lot of negative feedback. We chose this assignment because it was best for Kyle's career (people just didn't seen to understand that). Most of the negativity was from people who had never been there. Looking back I'm so glad we didn't listen to those people. We LOVE it here, we love the people and the atmosphere. Yes it's a border town and that's mostly what people worry about. El Paso has been voted one of the countries safest cities and I believe it.

I truly believe that if you embrace where you live and experience the local culture you will be happier. We have tried to do that and it has made a world of difference. I'm always looking for new adventures and El Paso never disappoints. We will be sad when it comes time to leave, but that is the craziness of this military life you just never know where you will end up.

Hope you all have a great day!

  1. I completely 100% agree! Your attitude definitely shows through your blog posts. We didn't know anything about Aviano before we got here, but we were super excited to experience the area. As soon as we got here, we were barraged with negativity about the work and the cultural differences and the language barrier. I let it all go in one ear and out the other and have been making the most of where we're at. Luckily my husband feeds off of my positivity instead of all the negativity.

  4. I wholeheartingly agree! Home is what you make it, and if you choose to have a negative outlook you will also have a negative attitude for sure! Love this!

  5. Great post. We're in Massachusetts, and I absolutely hate it here. This is a great reminder to make the best of a situation and embrace where you're at!

  7. Ok you're going to laugh at me, but I totally just googled to see where exactly El Paso, Texas is. You really are on the boarder, and I think it's awesome! :) Hope you have a great day!

  9. That's the perfect attitude! I am training myself to keep that attitude when my husband's orders take me away from NYC! All I'm focusing on is just getting the opportunity to be together and where ever we end up will be just fine.

    1. Exactly! All that matters is being together.

  10. You def have the right attitude. One of my Army wife friends actually told me if her husband ever gets stationed at Fort Polk, she and their 2.5 children will not be going with him. And, while I might not prefer certain posts, I'll go wherever Mac needs to go for his career.

  11. This is the attitude that more military spouses need to adopt! Each location is what you make of it. I'm a butt about being in Missouri, but some people actually love it here. It was the same back in Georgia. I knew so many people that hated Stewart, but I would KILL to go back there! Even though I hear a ton of complaints about Hawaii, I know the same will apply there.

  12. You are absolutely correct! I have always tried to make the best out of our duty stations, but here is Alaska I am having the hardest time. The cold is taking me much longer to get used too...and having 3 small kids makes it a little harder to embrace the outdoors. But I have been telling myself that I need to get out and do more things or I will regret it later when we leave.

  13. That's true! You have to find the positive of where you are living, otherwise you will never be happy.
I thought El Paso was nice, confusing to drive in, but nice to visit. My husband MOBed out of there and I spent a weekend with him before he left.

  16. I absolutely agree. I don't particularly like being stationed in So Cal but there are a lot of positives. We make the most of being stationed here but I still hope for orders :) I think Texas would be nice. I'm glad it has worked out for you and it was a great career move.

  17. You have to embrace your locations! Being in the guard now, we've been in NY for 13 years, and while I'm thankful we haven't had to move, I definitely miss it, too. I miss discovering a new place and meeting new people. And change can be good. I could definitely use a change now! Maybe I'll request a PCS. ;-)

  18. I completely agree! Our two assignments have been less than desirable by others (MS and NE) but we'be made the most out of each place and have honestly loved both! Great attitude!! :)

  19. Yes, it definitely makes sense to choose the duty station that is best for your hubby's career, and if you love it there, the better! We were stationed in Ft. Riley, and I didn't like it at all in the beginning. After a while, wen we settled in our apartment, I had a job and met people, I started to like it. I was indeed sad to leave, even though we were excited to move to Seattle. Hope you have a couple more years left in El Paso!

  20. Your attitude is so evident through your blog posts! I want to be as optimistic about where I end up after graduation as you are about where your husband is stationed! :)

  21. I hate that people were so negative. Even if you weren't okay with it, that type of attitude wouldn't help. Plus it's not like you could change it. It sounds like you have a great outlook!

  22. Yes! Attitude is everything!!!

  23. Will told me that he heard bad things about El Paso, but I told him that y'all are doing well there! I agree that you just have to embrace wherever you are.

  24. I totally agree! You should always make the best of things! ;)

  25. I love that you love it here, too :) I've just decided that some people will be unhappy anywhere. As someone I knew once put it, "They'd find something to complain about in Heaven." There's almost always a way to enjoy where you live, if you want to.
